Makers in Action: Sculptor James Florschutz
June 16, 2011
We’re honored to feature local artist James Florschutz‘s “Sedimental” and “Stacked Assemblage Drawings 1-3″ on display at ADX.
Florschutz, a recent transplant from Vermont, crafts awe-inducing pieces from scrap materials and found objects: “In using discarded materials (by-products) of our society and culture I investigate the ubiquity of sites, excavations and mapping. These discarded materials have their own language and tell their own stories. I attempt to unite these diverse materials to reveal insight into our culture’s sense of the environment,” Florschutz explains. “Sedimental,” for instance, resembles a cross section of the earth with its varied layers, but its materials are all very urban. The name spurred from the archaeology of Florschutz’s mind; crafting his pieces is spontaneous in its methodology, even though it’s a time-consuming process.
ADX looks forward to continued collaboration with Florschutz, who adds, “I love to have artists around me to bounce ideas off of, even though my sculpture process is rather solitary. There’s such a great exchange of ideas in Portland and I look forward to sharing my feedback as well!”
