10 Novice Boatbuilders (All Women!) Tackle Unique Project at ADX

June 8, 2011

There’s much to be admired for those who dive into a project or cause with full focus and perseverance. We’re fortunate to house such an effort this summer in one of our Factory Floor spaces.

Led by master shipwright Peter Crim (of local boatbuilding non-profit Wind and Oar) and volunteer instructor Travis Mitchel, an eager group of ten local women are constructing a Scottish-style St. Ayles Skiff from the ground up, using a kit to guide their fabrication work. For most participants, boatbuilding isn’t the only new skill they’re acquiring; some have never before operated a table saw or used anything more than hand tools to construct projects.

Upon completion, these industrious women will travel with their finished product to Maine, where the St. Ayles will compete in a race against other boatbuilders from all around the United States.

Check out a video of some of their construction below and learn more about this historic project on the Doryman blog.
